Michael Shelton, MS, CAC
I am a Certified Addictions Counselor specializing in the treatment of substance abuse, male sexual behavior concerns, and issues recurrent to gay and bisexual men. In addition to writing for national periodicals, I am the author of five books, lead workshops and trainings across the country, and am an “official” blogger for Psychology Today.
Substance Abuse
I’ve been treating substance abusers and their families for over fifteen years.
I am recognized for my work with gay male substance abusers. My 2011 book Gay Men and Substance Abuse is the first to specifically address drug use and the gay male population.
As a recognized youth development expert in the United States (including the writing of three books and innumerable articles as well as leading trainings and workshops across the county) I am adept at addressing drug use by children within the family.
As a practitioner of Behavioral Couples Therapy, I also work with couples struggling with substance misuse.
Male Sexual Disorders
I have been working with males with sexual disorders for over a decade.
I have an ongoing blog with Psychology Today on male sex and sexuality.
I had the great privilege to work at two of the most esteemed sexual treatment facilities in the United States, the Joseph J. Peters Institute and the Keystone Center, and am currently associated with Assessment and Treatment Alternatives.
As a recognized youth development expert in the United States (including the writing of three books and innumerable articles as well as leading trainings and workshops across the county) I have much experience with childhood and adolescent sexual issues and their impact on the family. My 2005 book Secret Encounters examines youth sexuality.
I have expertise with gay and bisexual male sexual concerns, and my 2008 book Boy Crazy: Gay Men and Monogamy explores recurrent sexual issues for these groups.
Gay and Bisexual Men
I am the author of Boy Crazy: Gay Men and Monogamy and Gay Men and Substance Abuse.
I have over fifteen years of experience working with gay and bisexual men, particularly drug use and/or sexual issues.
As a recognized youth development expert in the United States (including the writing of three books and innumerable articles as well as leading trainings and workshops across the county) I am experienced in working with same-sex parents and the repeated struggles they experience in raising a child in an often-homophobic world. I am the director of Mountain Meadow, a summer camp for children of same-sex parents.
