Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a mode of therapy that focuses on examining the relationship between thoughts, feelings and behaviors. By helping the client challenge certain patterns of thoughts that tend to lead to maladaptive behaviors, clients begin to develop new ways of approaching how they relate to themselves, others, and the environment.
In addition to working on what thoughts lead to negative behaviors, clinicians that have expertise in CBT also focus on the behaviors and how to best modify when they are presented. With children, the therapist will help the child/adolescent understand his/her emotions and learn to distinguish between different emotional states and how they are linked to thoughts as well as events.
CBT can be a tremendously effective form of treatment, especially for anxiety disorders, certain types of depression and difficulties with emotional regulation.

The Process of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Depending on the child’s age, some caregiver or parent coaching may be provided to help the caregiver(s) learn the skills they need to help their children at home.
