What is Grief and Loss?
Understanding Grief and Loss
What comes to mind when you think of grief and loss? Do the following come to mind: losing a loved one, the end of a relationship, not getting that job or losing your job, learning there is no Santa?
Some examples of loss are obvious while others are not so obvious like a new baby in the family, graduating, or starting a new relationship. Though these are joyous moments, there is something being lost. It may be losing time with a loved one; the loss of your innocence; or realizing that reuniting with an old flame is not a reality.
Everyone experiences loss differently. It is important to remember that all changes, even good ones begin with an ending. When good things happen the way things used to be is gone and there is a period of readjustment.
Feelings Associated With Loss
There are many feelings that one can experience because of a loss. One can feel anger, hurt, sadness, depression, helplessness, and even fear. In addition to feelings, there are several thoughts come to mind. You may deny that the loss happened. You make think about how you could have or should have acted. So how does one deal with grief and loss and the thoughts and emotions that come up?
